Résumé

The current research aims to investigate and determine through error analysis the
interference of the mother tongue (Arabic) on first year EFL learners writing productions at the department of English, Mohamed Cherif Messadia University, Souk Ahras. This study seeks to investigate to what extent can the mother tongue interference affect ELF learners writing productions. So as to confirm or reject the hypothesis, which states that the mother tongue interference brings about many writing errors, leading to poor productions, and that it can be the major cause of them, the mixed methods was adopted. Data were collected through a questionnaire and a written test administered to 45 students so as to examine their views and attitudes towards the negative influence of the native language. The research results revealed that the types of errors found can be categorized into interlingual and intralingual errors, and the negative interference of the native language is one of the main causes of students’ errors that occur at different levels of the language components. Hence, in the light of these findings, the hypothesis was confirmed.
